Fannin UK Obtains CE Mark Approval for New Laparoscopic Morcellator

Fannin UK The Espiner Morcell8OR

Medical devices provider, Fannin UK, has announced the launch of a new Morcellator for use in gynaecologic tissue retrieval procedures.

The ‘Espiner Morcell8OR’ is an electrically powered, laparoscopic morcellator intended for the controlled cutting, coring and extraction of devascularised uterine tissue during gynaecologic procedures, like hysterectomy and myomectomy, where morcellation is clinically appropriate and larger tissue specimens must be removed through small incisions. Powered by an AC mains system, the device uses continuous energy throughout the procedure, removing reliance on battery power and supporting consistent performance during use.

Designed as a single-use, sterile device, the Morcell8OR incorporates a high-speed motor delivering delivering a measured range of 1450–1850 RPM, providing consistent cutting speed to support controlled tissue fragmentation. A lightweight, ergonomic design supports ease of handling for surgeons, while an integrated adjustable core guard protects the cutting tube when not in use.

A key advantage of this device is its integration with Espiner’s established tissue retrieval range. When used alongside the Espiner Morcellation Sac, surgeons can perform contained morcellation within a durable Polyurethane-coated ripstop Nylon bag designed to support a contained approach to tissue handling during the procedure.

With the launch of the Espiner Morcell8OR, Espiner now offers a complete laparoscopic tissue management system, combining widely established morcellation sacs with a purpose-designed morcellator under one integrated brand,” said Joseph Coogan, Head of Commercial Development at Fannin.

Espiner Medical, a Fannin brand, brings decades of surgical innovation to this launch. Founded by pioneering laparoscopic surgeon Harry Espiner in 1990, the company developed its first tissue retrieval sac in collaboration with aerospace fabric specialists, using lightweight ripstop nylon technology originally designed for hot air balloons as the base material and combining it with Espiner’s own proprietary coating technology to create a strong, leak-resistant containment system for laparoscopic surgery. Today the Espiner range, manufactured in the UK and distributed globally through Fannin, continues to evolve to support surgeons performing increasingly complex minimally invasive procedures.

“Gynaecology surgeons who already use Espiner containment solutions can now pair them with the new Morcell8OR to create a consistent workflow from tissue fragmentation through to retrieval, combining containment and powered morcellation, within a single system,” added Joseph Coogan.
